Namotomoto (Fiji) – I can do anything – Lani Benuci

“For me as an individual, cricket has made a huge difference in my life, because I am a mother and a wife and I thought that was it for me.  But then I started playing cricket and became part of the National Women’s Team and went to places I never dreamed of.  From playing cricket I realized, ‘hey, I can do anything!’

Playing cricket gave me the opportunity to show my potential and that my purpose was not just to be a mother and a wife, but also a good cricketer.  In my village where I grew up, Namotomoto, they only played rugby and netball, but in my husband’s village, they have the only cricket club in the west.  I joined the Nakavu team where my husband is from and that’s where I learned cricket.  I played for a team that helped girls learn cricket because only the boys play cricket in most of the villages.   I want to take cricket to Namotomoto and I want them to see that cricket can take you anywhere, not just rugby and netball!  Especially for the kids, cricket is good because it is a non-contact sport unlike rugby, and for youths who have just left school and don’t have a job it’s a good sport to play as it can take you anywhere.  I want to show them this by teaching them cricket.”
