Secretary of State ‘bowled over’ by Beach Cricket plans

Last Thursday, Steve Double, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for St Austell and Newquay, welcomed Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Sajid Javid MP to Cornwall, taking him to Watergate Bay Beach where the Cabinet Member was able to participate in a game of Beach Cricket which was played on a new 2G Flicx Pitch.

The meeting at Watergate Bay was arranged by Steve Double and Sean Hooper of the Cornish Cricket Company to announce new plans for the first National Beach Cricket Competition scheduled for next year.

Speaking at the launch Sean Hooper said ‘I have had plans for a few years now to bring a national beach cricket tournament to Cornwall. Here on the north coast of mid-Cornwall we have a number of beaches that provide brilliant venues for this sport which is growing in popularity, especially here at Watergate Bay.’

‘Working with Nick Webb of Bare Feet Production and using my contacts within the cricketing world we plan to bring up to 32 teams here to Cornwall next year for the first National Beach Cricket Competition. My aim is that this will take off and become a regular event here in Cornwall that will attract participants and spectators from around the country’.

Commenting on the plans Sajid Javid MP said ‘Anything that encourages people to get involved in sport has to be a good thing. I love the sound of these plans as they present a new and exciting opportunity to make the most of the wonderful beaches in this part of Cornwall for one of my favourite sports. As well as promoting a new and innovative form of cricket they will also attract people to Cornwall to support the local tourist industry’.

Steve Double, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for the area said ‘I have been in discussions with Sean Hooper about this idea for several months. It is brilliant that we are now in a position to announce the plans and move forward with bringing this competition to mid-Cornwall next year. This is just the type of event we need to see more of in this area as it will attract new people to Cornwall and help support tourism outside of the peak season. I am delighted to be able to bring Sajid to the constituency and show him just what a great place this part of Cornwall is and how we have people who are working together to find new ways to support the local economy.’

Flicx UK are working in partnership with Sean and his team to get the event off the ground and an agreement has been put in place which will see the whole competition played on Flicx Pitches. Sponsors of the National Beach Cricket Competition will be able to have their company branding on the pitches which can also be bespoked in terms of colour and design.

After meeting with Steve Double and Sean Hooper to discuss the plans the Secretary of State tried his hand at batting against some young cricketers from Truro College.

Beach Cricket on the new 2G Flicx Pitch

To celebrate the Scarborough Cricket Festival, the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation hosted the inaugural Beach Cricket Tournament on South Bay Beach in front of the iconic Scarborough Spa with 6 under 11 junior cricket teams taking part in the event over 2 days. Flicx UK loaned the YCF a new 2G Flicx Skills pitch for the duration of the competition.

Wednesday 13th August saw Wykeham take on Snainton & Hesleton, with play scheduled to start at 10am. However, after an extraordinarily high tide caused by a ‘super moon’, play was delayed to allow the tide out enough to get play under way. Luckily enough, the 2G Flicx pitch drained exceptionally well and the match was able to get under way just 30 minutes late! After some excellent cricket, Whykham overcame their opponents to claim the victory.

Thursday 14th August brought together Scalby, Seamer, Duncombe Park and Flixton cricket clubs, all vying for triumph. Cloudy skies and the odd shower couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the participants; as the round robin tournament progressed Seamer and Flixton under 11s emerged as the 2 teams to beat and the final match of the afternoon saw the 2 meet in a winner takes all encounter that saw Seamer CC take the win in style and celebrate by running into the ocean!

The winners from each day and their coach were delighted to receive 2 pair of tickets each for next year’s test match between England and New Zealand at Headingley. All other competitors and their coaches received a pair of tickets to watch a Yorkshire match of their choosing in the 2015 season as well as the opportunity to come to Scarborough to watch day 1 of the Yorkshire v Sussex match.

The engagement and enthusiasm from all the participants made the tournament a massive success and we look forward to coming back next year with an even bigger and better event! said Nick Robinson   Project Officer – Yorkshire Cricket Foundation… Thanks again for letting us use the pitch for the beach cricket tournament. It worked fantastically and was commented on by many of the coaches very positively.

Flicx UK donates a pitch to the Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation

The Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation was formed in August 2011 to build and manage, on a not-for-profit basis, the first dedicated international cricket ground in Rwanda. The charity is run by a team of cricket enthusiasts from the UK and Rwanda, in partnership with the Marylebone Cricket Club Foundation

RCSF.org.uk

Development of a 4.5 hectare site on the edge of Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, is due to begin in October 2014. From there, the Rwanda Cricket Association can continue their excellent progress in developing the game in schools and universities as well as amongst Rwanda’s most disadvantaged young people.

After hearing about the project Flicx UK Managing Director Richard Beghin decided to help. “I started Flicx so as to give the youngsters  of South Africa, after the apartheid era, a level playing field. A playing field without racial, social and economic inequalities where here kids could have fun no matter their background. It is clear that by playing a game of cricket that these kids develop a willingness to strive to improve and a passion to win so we are delighted to help by providing a pitch to the stadium project”. These  thoughts were echoed by  Jonathan Agnew, Former England Test Cricketer and Host of BBC Radio Test Match Special who is involved in the fundraising efforts saying “Given Rwanda’s troubled past, I am sure cricket can play a strong role in bringing the people of Rwanda together.”

Flicx will donate a full match pitch to RCSF which will provide a high quality, versatile surface for cricket in the country. In such a hot climate, where it is understandably difficult to maintain a cricket wicket, the Flicx Pitch will allow a great standard of match to take place with the batsmen able to play their shots with confidence whilst still taking seam and spin for the bowlers. It will also be possible for the team to roll up the pitch and take it round the country to inspire more people to play the game as a means to overcoming recent conflicts.

Said Heather Knight, England women’s cricket rising star and RCSW patron who visited Rwanda in February 2014 to coach the women’s players and support the work of the RCSF. “It great news that Flicx have kindly donated some of your pitches to Rwanda. Thanks so much! They will be put to great use out there I’m sure”

As part of the fundraising efforts,Wormsely will host a  BRIAN LARA INVITATIONAL XI VS WARWICKSHIRE 1990S XI on the 14th September in a match that will feature some high profile former stars including Andrew Strauss, Paul Nixon Ashley Giles, Clare Connor and Brian Lara himself. Flicx will be supporting that event too so keep following our blog for all the latest news on the RCSF project which is one of the beneficiaries of the Mt Kili Madness climb.

2G Flicx Pitch at Littletown CC is officially opened by Durham cricketer Chris Rushworth

Littletown CC under 11’s played the first ever game on the clubs new 2G Flicx Pitch on Saturday and put in a performance to match beating Etherley, under the watchful eye of Durham’s Chris Rushworth who had earlier cut the ribbon and officially opened the new pitch which was the clubs prize for winning a nationwide competition run in the Cricketer Magazine.

The cricketing fun day included a Q+A with Chris, a BBQ and lots of Crazy Catch games as well as a fundraising raffle which raised over £100 for Chris’ “Dry 2014” challenge in aid of Save the Children. A great day was had by all and the cricket on the new 2G Flicx wicket was to a very high standard with the Littletown juniors pulling our all the stops in a fine batting display, in their first ever win!

Speaking about their prize from Flicx UK, Edd Finn the Littletown CC Chairman said “The Flicx 2G pitch has given our teams the chance to regularly practice on our square without the worry of cutting up our wickets, whilst also offering genuine bounce and pitch movements that a grass pitch would offer. It has enabled us to play junior games when our grass pitches have been too damp and has produced good sensible bounce that has enabled a well contested game to be carried out.”

Littletown CC has been transformed recently from an “overgrown wasteland” into a “field of dream” and the club has further ambitious plans to redevelop and extend the pavilion in the next few years. With a great community spirit and some passionate volunteers – we are certain that Littletown are destined for a big future. Our event video will be released soon, in the meantime please do check out our photo gallery below

Cricket Central Reviews the 2G Flicx Pitch

On Wednesday 12th March, Richard Beghin – MD of Flicx UK travelled to Lowestoft for a nets session with Southwold CC held at Benjamin Britten college organised by Alex Britten owner of Cricket Central, an independent cricket magazine launched in February 2013.

The full review is up on their website now and looks at the new surface through the eyes of both a batsman and a bowler with the comment being ” As a bowler, you know the surface is going to offer something – if you hit the seam you’ll get lateral movement, as well as appreciable bounce if you’re looking to bowl short. And as a batsman you find yourself trusting the bounce almost straight away.”

The overwhelming reaction from Southwold Cricket Club’s bowlers and batsmen was positive. The batsmen felt challenged on it because of the extra life in the pitch – yet ultimately safe because the fear of a ball climbing off a good length was almost non-existent. And the bowlers, even after two hours, were queuing up to run in as they knew they could get movement off the pitch.

Having a Flicx 2G pitch at your cricket club gives you the ability to turn any sports field into a cricket pitch in no time at all and the the pitch can be rolled out both indoors and outdoors. The surface we reviewed was 10m x 1.8m, costing £1275.00 plus VAT, and comes with a carrier. But with a life expectancy of around 10 years this is a real investment to any cricket club.

Flicx have created a cricket wicket more true than any other artificial any of us have played on. Favouring neither batsmen nor bowlers, this is an excellent piece of kit which will help youngsters develop their cricket and adults hone their skills – highly recommended for any club.
