Flicx UK were delighted to be involved in SportFest recently, where a new 2G skills pitch was set up and available for general use in the cricket zone which was run by Mark Garroway, Director of Cricket Coaching at Millfield School. Held annually, SportFest is a celebration of family fun and sport. Families camp out in the beautiful Wormsley estate and enjoy coaching from sporting legends, music, great food and competitions in a relaxed festival environment.
This year the event was a sell out and Cricket stars including Andrew Strauss, Paul Nixon and Matthew Hoggard were all heavily involved in the coaching program and are pictured below batting on the new 2G Flicx Pitch whilst giving out some top tips. The Flicx 2G pitch is a versatile, portable product that is available in a range of sizes for a whole host of applications including for junior club cricket matches, indoor cricket, to convert any existing sports field into a cricket pitch or even as a superb surface to play on in your garden in a home academy system which includes nets and a bowling machine (as pictured)

To celebrate the Scarborough Cricket Festival, the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation hosted the inaugural Beach Cricket Tournament on South Bay Beach in front of the iconic Scarborough Spa with 6 under 11 junior cricket teams taking part in the event over 2 days. Flicx UK loaned the YCF a new 2G Flicx Skills pitch for the duration of the competition.
Wednesday 13th August saw Wykeham take on Snainton & Hesleton, with play scheduled to start at 10am. However, after an extraordinarily high tide caused by a ‘super moon’, play was delayed to allow the tide out enough to get play under way. Luckily enough, the 2G Flicx pitch drained exceptionally well and the match was able to get under way just 30 minutes late! After some excellent cricket, Whykham overcame their opponents to claim the victory.
Thursday 14th August brought together Scalby, Seamer, Duncombe Park and Flixton cricket clubs, all vying for triumph. Cloudy skies and the odd shower couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the participants; as the round robin tournament progressed Seamer and Flixton under 11s emerged as the 2 teams to beat and the final match of the afternoon saw the 2 meet in a winner takes all encounter that saw Seamer CC take the win in style and celebrate by running into the ocean!
The winners from each day and their coach were delighted to receive 2 pair of tickets each for next year’s test match between England and New Zealand at Headingley. All other competitors and their coaches received a pair of tickets to watch a Yorkshire match of their choosing in the 2015 season as well as the opportunity to come to Scarborough to watch day 1 of the Yorkshire v Sussex match.
The engagement and enthusiasm from all the participants made the tournament a massive success and we look forward to coming back next year with an even bigger and better event! said Nick Robinson Project Officer – Yorkshire Cricket Foundation… Thanks again for letting us use the pitch for the beach cricket tournament. It worked fantastically and was commented on by many of the coaches very positively.
INSIDE FOOTBALL is a new indoor football venue in Stroud, opened in March 2014 by Tony Adams and run by former Aston Villa footballer Steve Cowe and friend Clive Eckersal. The venue consists of three small courts separated by weighted curtains, which can be pulled back to create a 3G football pitch. There is also a reception area, a lounge area with sofas, a stand for spectators, toilets, changing rooms and a multi purpose room to serve as a classroom, party room or fitness area. Now thanks to the installation of a new 2G Flicx Pitch, the venue can also be used for cricket too.
Inside Football – Cricket on a 3G
Clive Eckersall picks up the story…. “We opened Inside Football in January 2014 and concentrated on developing the football bookings side of the business with Clubs, Leagues, Casual bookings & Childrens Coaching / Holiday Camps. With the summer 6 weeks long, we needed to offer other sports for our holiday courses such as cricket, tag rugby, rounders etc.
The company we employed to carry out the 3G & netting installation was S & C Slatter of Newbury and we asked them to recommend a cricket mat suitable for rolling out & laying on the surface and they recommended the Flicx mats. Gary came down from Flicx UK with a mat to demo and we invited Ben Gannon, a former professional cricketer, to come along and try out it out. We were all very happy with the results with good bounce being produced. Since purchasing the pitch, we have had alot of interest from local cricket clubs and are now advertising the fact we can offer cricket at our unique facility. We are looking to expand in the future with the possibility of installing nets dividing a pitch into 3 cricket nets and installing 2 more Flicx cricket mats. We look forward to a successful partnership with Flicx UK”
Speaking about the concept of transforming indoor football venues into cricketing facilities, Flicx UK Managing Director Richard Beghin said it was an increasingly popular request. “We are seeing a number of footballing facilities adding a Flicx pitch to their offering which enables them to also run indoor cricket leagues without any damage to the surface below. Indoor cricket is becoming increasingly popular during the winter months and its very easy to roll out a 2G Flicx Pitch onto a rubbercrumb pitch and it can just be rolled up and stored on its end after use. For operators its a great way to enhance the offering of their venue and attract new bookings just like Inside Football and The Soccer Factory (see video below) have successfully done.
