Background to the new 2G Flicx Pitch from Flicx UK

When Flicx founder Richard Beghin realised there weren’t enough facilities for the increasingly popular sport of cricket in South Africa, he developed the Flicx Cricket Pitch and in August 1997 the first one was rolled out at Telkom Country Club in Pretoria.

In 1999, after creating a successful business in South Africa, Flicx launched in the UK at the England and Wales Cricket coaching conference where the so called “lego” pitch was met with a tremendous response with the ECB ordering 800 for grassroots cricket in the UK while the ICC went on to order Flicx Pitches for the development of the sport all around the world. Flicx has grown to being a well-recognised and respected brand in cricketing circles, with pitches, batting ends and throwdown’s being purchased by many clubs and schools and even by individuals wanting to transform their back garden into a cricket pitch!

Now, new for the 2014 season and manufactured in the UK, we present the 2G Flicx Pitch which is a new surface with improved grip and playing performance. Unlike its predecessor, the 2G Flicx pitches can be made bespoke to order with the colours and branding of your choice and also comes with an expanded product range featuring the colourful new Skills pitch and an innovative Eagle-eyed pitch. Both of these new designs aid the coaching of young players maintaining Richard’s belief that we can teach children at all levels, through sport, that life is about team work, individual skills and the will to win and not about selfishness, greed and individualism that they will then have a wonderful opportunity for a better way of life.

Retailing the new Flicx Pitch range

Flicx UK will be working closely with leading sports retailers to market the 2G pitches to cricket clubs and schools in the UK and overseas with recent trials also proving its value as an indoor cricket surface as you can roll out the pitch then play instantly without taping. Speaking about the 2G pitches performance, Dartfordians coach Mike Lanning commented “The bounce using hard balls was good and trustworthy, comparable to an outdoor surface for both seam and spin bowling. The 2G Flicx mat is now allowing us to train much more effectively in the hall with both colts and seniors; we can now, for example, use the bowling machine there for the first time.”

Great marketing support is provided in abundance by the Brackley based business who expect 2G sales in the launch season to double normal figures. Testing and competitions will also help build brand awareness of a product which really does enable cricket to be played anywhere as the company has proved time and again.

A more colourful game of cricket!

One of the great new features of the 2G Flicx Pitch is the ability of customers to bespoke their pitch design. The Flicx Pitch is available in 6 palette colours (with other shades available on request). So for the none traditionalists, why not go for a bright wicket that will really make the ball stand out.

In addition you can mix and match colours with our 2 coaching pitches, the 2G Skills pitch and the 2G Eagle-eyed pitch which are a great tools in helping to develop young players. The coloured targets help teach bowlers to become more consistent with their line and length whilst also helping batsmen with their decision making. The tile palette options also enable customers to pick their club or school colour scheme and we then also have the option now with the 2G surface of adding your own branding or logo’s to the pitch.

Adding a logo, is a great way to promote your club or to give something back in increased awareness to your corporate or club sponsors as it enables then to more visually promote their brand and association with the game. Sponsors would gain more exposure with the pitch featuring in match photos etc whilst it could also add an element of legacy if the sponsor was willing to fund the creation of the new facility itself to help to grow the game locally.

Speaking about sponsorship opportunities Kate Costin, Flicx UK Brand Development Manager said “For companies looking to support local grass roots cricket, the purchase of a new 2G Flicx Pitch is a great investment. Not only will it enhance a club or schools facilities but it is also has great visual impact for a brand”

Clubs at the event were clearly impressed with the new surface which has many benefits including improved ball bounce and better seam and spin performance versus its predecessor. In addition the 2G range has 2 new designs, the 2G Flicx Skills pitch and the 2G Eagle-eyed pitch which are great coaching aids with bright colours and markings helping players bowl a more consistent line and length whilst supporting batting decision making.

Managing Director Richard Beghin outlined some of the applications of the new 2G Flicx Pitch, which is now UK made and in stock at Flicx UK for immediate delivery ahead of the new season. “The softer nature of the 2G product means that we believe it is the perfect surface solution for the indoor game. The pitch rolls out flat the bounce is very consistent which allows clubs to have a high standard of winter training. In addition it’s a great match surface for both juniors and seniors, and means any flat surface or sports field can be transformed into a cricketing venue as well being an instant solution to upgrade a worn synthetic surface
